Abstract
A wide range of Ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA) copolymers, which posses a random structure, are nowadays commercially available for many industrial purposes, such as adhesives, packaging, etc. In each case, the application is determined by the molecular weight and the Vinyl acetate (VA) content. The Vinyl acetate groups disrupt the regular polyethylene (PE) segments reducing the crystallinity of pure PE.
The use of EVA copolymers as bitumen modifiers, to optimise the temperature operating rate of pavements, is an application which has also been considered1.
However the use of dispersions and solutions of this copolymer in oils to prepare synthetic binders, capable of substitute natural bitumen2, is a subject which has not been treated in the literature. The success in preparing synthetic binders depends at a great extent on the ability of polymer/oil systems to give rise to physical gels, which impart the adequate viscoelastic properties to the final material.

The Italian Society of Rheology (SIR) organizes every two years the Italian Rheology Conference, which is the meeting point of the National and International rheological community to promote knowledge and discuss research in the field of rheology. The Conference consists of keynote lectures, oral communications and posters on topics related to all the thematic areas of rheology. The XIX edition will be held in the conference rooms of Plesso Belmeloro, in the city centre of Bologna, in June 16th-19th, 2026.
