Abstract
The last in a series of international programmes that have been developed, over the last decade and a half, around different standard fluids is the one developed around the so-called S1 fluid. This is a solution of Polyisobutylene in a mixed solvent and the aim of the programme is to study the rheology of polymer solutions from the dilute solution to the melt.
The focus of this paper will be twofold: i) on the flow visualisation of contraction flows of S1 through orifice dies and on the estimation of some of its extensional properties and ii) on the theoretical modelling of the behaviour of S1 in the same contraction flows.

The Italian Society of Rheology (SIR) organizes every two years the Italian Rheology Conference, which is the meeting point of the National and International rheological community to promote knowledge and discuss research in the field of rheology. The Conference consists of keynote lectures, oral communications and posters on topics related to all the thematic areas of rheology. The XIX edition will be held in the conference rooms of Plesso Belmeloro, in the city centre of Bologna, in June 16th-19th, 2026.
