Theoretical and experimental determination of drop shape in slow steady shear flow

Abstract
The problem of determining the shape of a drop immersed in an immiscible flowing fluid received much attention in the literature, both on the theoretical and the experimental side [1]. The constitutive properties of the component fluids, together with the interface properties, clearly enter as relevant parameters in the single drop problem. For Newtonian fluids, the continuous phase and drop viscosities ( , respectively) should be taken into account. Also, an interfacial tension is required. It should be immediately emphasized here that, even in the simple case of Newtonian components, the overall system is a non-Newtonian fluid, because of the elasticity associated with the interface.

The Italian Society of Rheology (SIR) organizes every two years the Italian Rheology Conference, which is the meeting point of the National and International rheological community to promote knowledge and discuss research in the field of rheology. The Conference consists of keynote lectures, oral communications and posters on topics related to all the thematic areas of rheology. The XIX edition will be held in the conference rooms of Plesso Belmeloro, in the city centre of Bologna, in June 16th-19th, 2026.
