Abstract
The sound produced by string instruments is due to the vibrations of the strings stretched on the soundbox that acts as an acoustic reflector, i.e. it strengthens the resounding effect of the strings chafed by bow. Each string vibration frequency induces a distinctive course of vibrations within the soundbox. Acoustic damping is caused by irradiation and internal friction. It is obviously preferable that in string instruments acoustic damping by irradiation be relatively high in comparison with internal dissipation. Soundboxes made from the radial/subradial Norway spruce (Picea abies Karst.) boards characterized by straight grain and regular rings eventually indented show excellent properties in such a respect. Along time, internal dissipation produces molecular settling that may alter the acoustic characteristics of string instruments: the outcome may be the so-called “historic” sound.

The Italian Society of Rheology (SIR) organizes every two years the Italian Rheology Conference, which is the meeting point of the National and International rheological community to promote knowledge and discuss research in the field of rheology. The Conference consists of keynote lectures, oral communications and posters on topics related to all the thematic areas of rheology.
The XIX edition will be held in the conference rooms of Plesso Belmeloro, in the city centre of Bologna, in June 16th-19th, 2026.
