San Giovanni in Monte is a historic building, formerly a convent of the Lateran Canons, restored and repurposed by Rector Fabio Roversi Monaco after being used as a prison from the Napoleonic era until 1984. The restoration project represented a cultural reinterpretation of the convent building's function as a place of study and meditation, which it had acquired for the city during the Renaissance period. Among the 16th-century creations, now a reception hall, is the large refectory, the current Giorgio Prodi Hall, which features a fresco by Bartolomeo Cesi depicting the royal wedding from the parable in Matthew 22.
